The Thought Process Behind The Writing Of A Play

About MORGAN!

My (then) ten-year-old daughter gave me the idea to write a play about King Arthur’s shadowy half-sister, Morgan Le Fay. We had been looking into the reasons behind many of Arthur’s advancements, and the name “Morgan” kept re-appearing. Finally, with genuinely furrowed brow, she turned to me and asked, “Morgan? Who is he?”

     That did it.

The more-or-less standard literary answer to that question satisfied her curiosity, but started me on my own quest. Simply to say she was Arthur’s half-sister, jealous for power, blah blah blah, seemed shallow. In my reasoning, she had become a medieval novelist’s tool, used to justify the why behind many of the adventures in Camelot - simply that and nothing more; a cause-and-effect woman, without reasoned passion or warm blood. That dismissal was not nearly a good enough answer for me.

So. Before I placed the first word on paper, I started reading. For two l-o-n-g years I devoured every jot of fact and fiction I could lay eyes upon. I also studied actual histories – the justification of the romance of knighthood in flower, suggesting that it all started with Arthur … which was a lie. Writers at the time placed Arthur a good 500 years later than he actually lived.

From the start I had been struggling with what seemed like an insurmountable problem. If I portrayed the Arthur of legend as anything but good, I would have a minor riot on my hands. But I didn’t want Morgan to be bad either, at least not in the beginning. The answer came from a TV news report (Thank you CBS), examining rumors that Americans had massacred the inhabitants of a small village during the Viet Nam war. I instantly saw parallels. It was possible for good men to do bad things, and suddenly MORGAN had flesh. As a small child Morgan had seen her father killed and her mother raped, later to give birth to Arthur. It became clear – Morgan wanted justice, and, being a woman, took the only means available to her to achieve her goals – black magic.

So? What happened? What went wrong?

Somewhere I remembered reading that “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” That pointed me in a direction that justified what actually happened in everybody else’s version of the story. Further, the shadow of Adolf Hitler seems to guide her adult years into fear, hate, and paranoia, and at the same time allowing her to be a spell caster in more than one way.

In the end, I think I was more kind to Morgan than others have been. I had her powers taken from her, yet allowed her to live. I should like to think that in her final years sanity might have been restored to a degree, and she might have found peace of a sort.

Nope. The story isn’t over yet. In doing all this research, I decided there are THREE plays here. MORGAN is the second play, and there are conclusions from the first play woven into the plot. The third play gives a final – if surprising – end to the Arthur drama. Three plays, then – MERLIN, MORGAN, MERDOC. The third play, MERDOC, has perhaps a dozen pages written so far. The first play, MERLIN, has perhaps one page written – all character.

At some point I might have the inclination to finish the trio of plays. No hurry. I have all the time in the world.

ABOUT DRAMA CRITICS

For the record, along with writing and directing plays, over the years I have been employed as a Drama Critic – first for a newspaper chain, later on television, and finally on the internet. As a result, I’ve sat on both sides of that issue, and have a few thoughts I’d like to pass along to the unenlightened.

First, there is the question of qualification – what exactly qualifies someone – anyone – to judge a play and publicize an opinion? The answer is simple; someone pays them to do it. That’s it. Period. They receive money or free tickets or trips or booze or SOMETHING that authorizes them to do what they do. For major newspapers, a degree in journalism gets you in the door, and allows you to weigh the relative values of a Shakespeare presentation, a sheep shearing demonstration, and a pie eating contest with the same creditability. In other places – say Columbus Ohio – the only apparent qualifications are that you have actually seen a play, can spell most of the words in your review correctly, and occasionally place one coherent thought behind another.

So. Now that we understand qualifications, let’s go on to TYPE. Did you know there are two and a half types of Drama Critics? There are. To use the broadest definition possible, they are as follows. First, there is the Reviewer. This person literally views something and reports it in order – this happened, then this happened, rhen this happened, blah blah blah. Next comes the Drama Critic. This person critiques, that is, gives an assessment of what is seen – this is good, this is not. This judgment is based solely on the Critic’s own standards of good and bad. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Eventually you learn how they feel about this or that, and reach your own conclusions accordingly. It’s a system that has worked well for thousands of years, and what you actually read SHOULD BE a combination of both of these types.

Now we go on to the bastard child of drama. This individual substitutes criticism for critique. Three factors contribute to this fall from grace. First, there only a limited number of ways you can give a favorable report. After a while you have used every adjective in your repertoire, and – to you – it all starts looking the same. Second, you become jaded. Even good drama, if you see it day in and day out, is right up there with watching dish water. Only the bazaar makes an actual impression on your fevered psyche. And third, with no one to tell you otherwise, you begin to actually believe you are as clever, witty, and knowledgeable as the hype built around you. If the ways to praise a play are limited, there are boundless ways to tear that same work to shreds, and make yourself look like the all powerful Oz in the process. What is even sadder is the fact that the system works. The deeper the cut, the more power you wield over people with no readily available voice with which to respond.

The end result of this self-induced aggrandizement is that many theatres avoid producing original plays simply because a bad review could put them out of business. And I will tell you I have received my share of reviews over the years. Further, I will agree that, until the present regime came into power, most were accurate. Perhaps that makes me one of the fortunate playwrights. On the other hand, I have learned that my plays that premiere at least a hundred miles away from where I live, almost always receive more favorable reviews than those produced locally.  And that is the saddest part of it all.

New Directions

I had a thought (always dangerous.)

For the last gazillion years I was an on-again off-again theatre reviewer for a newspaper chain, a TV station, and - lately - a website.

Of late I've missed doing that. Since THIS website isn't doing much lately, I thought I'd switch it over to reviews, interviews, chatter in and around the Columbus area ...

Comments? Thoughts?

FEBRUARY 2013

Our revels now are ended.

These, our actors, as I foretold you, were all spirits, and are melted into air, into thin air; and like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud-capp’d tow’rs, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the great globe itself, yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, and, like this insubstantial pageant faded, leave not a rack behind.

We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep.

This blog is going to go dark for a period of time. It isn't because of less love for the subject - live theatre has often been the prime motivator of my life. Rather, it is for this very reason I pause. Simply, I can't keep up. With 40 plus groups pumping out shows at an -end-of-the-world pace, I find myself spending more time reading newsletters and Facebook announcements than I do actually participating in the craft. And, selfishly, the whole purpose here was to promote EVERYTHING equally. To omit even one presentation by even one theatre results in unintentional favoritism, and that I cannot abide.

So. Adieu for now, gracious readers. Adieu and fare you well. I appreciate your support more than you know. And, this parting does not mean we shall never meet again. The blog will remain, and with some serious contemplation, may rise again in another hopefully useful form.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

     j

     February 1.

We learned today that TAPA will be going dark. This is sad, they certainly will be missed. Hopefully this is only a momentary set-back, and that they will return soon, larger than ever.
